I would use this picture as a prompt for a persuasive essay. In the 11th grade, students are to master persuasive writing and show that mastery on their state test. It would go something like this:
Many people believe that because we are a nation built by refugees, we should continue helping them. Others believe that because many terrorists come from other countries, we should try to keep as many people out that might pose a risk to our nation. Should America accept some of the refugees that have come about because of the recent crisis in the Middle East and Northern Africa, or should we not? Support your answer with reasons and specific examples.
